The People's Champ- Monday Morning NFL Thoughts

I hate Mike Shanahan. I really do (being a Raider fan does that to a guy). I hate him for drafting Selvin Young, who is clearly the best back on the Broncos and the guy is in a RBBC situation. With that being said I absolutely loved the balls he showed Sunday when he went for the W instead of the conventional "when at home play for the tie and Overtime" thinking. You get the feeling that Shanahan really likes this Denver squad and loves Cutler. That was a statement of "I have a franchise QB and he's gonna know it." move. No matter the outcome there, his team knows that Cutler is the unequivical Man and Cutler knows his coach has the utmost confidence in him. Super move by a great coach.
Which is the exact opposite of what happened in the Meadowlands yesterday. Mangini showed he doesn't have the balls to win in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. You have a franchise QB and for the second straight week you took the ball out of his hands and this week it cost the Jets the game. How they hand the ball off to Thomas "I couldn't find the end zone" Jones (the fact that he's on my fantasy squad actually causes no antogonism whatsoever towards him..............) and not let Favre make something happen there is beyond belief. An awful job by Mangini.
Matt Cassel showed he is at best a competent, hold down the fort NFL QB. Two numbers show exactly how effective he was: Moss 2 catches 22 yards. 33 rushes, 3.2 YPC. You can get away with that against the Mangini "let's play not to lose" Jets. He won't get away with that against the Steelers, Broncos or Chargers. Don't let the result fool you. The Pats were a vastly different team on the field yesterday with Cassel instead of Brady.
What he did do well, is he kept his team in the game and didn't make any big mistakes. While there's a lot to be said for that, the Pats won't go that far with him just "managing the game".
Which gets me to the Vikings. How they went into this season with Tavaris Jackson as their starting QB is incomprehensible. The guy is awful and he is killing an otherwise very solid team. Peterson would go for 200+ a week if he had a decent QB keeping things honest. As it is, the fact that he is running up these type yardage numbers shows how great a player he is. You dont think Pennington could have helped them? Dante would have ben a major upgrade as would be Simms or Garcia. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a move soon. The season can get lost fast when you start 0-2.
Rodgers looks pretty good, no? After two weeks, looks like GB made the right decision; for now and the future.
How many more weeks till Derek Anderson loses his job? Don't say I didn't tell you so.
The Giants looked great again yesterday.....at least when it counted. They seem to lose interest when they get a good lead but they have shown they can turn it on when needed. Eli looked great, the running game is special and Tuck might be the best all around defensive lineman in the game. Strahan and Osi who?
Warner threw a proverbial perfect game yesterday, going 19-24 361 yards and 3 TD's for the perfect QB rating of 158.3. I said it once and I'll say it a thousand times, if he has time to set up in the pocket, he's as good as any QB out there. His numbers don't lie. He's also making The People's Sleeper team in the NFC look very formidable.
Seattle is lost with all those injuries. KC is just horrid and all fantasy players would like to personally thank Herm Edwards for taking the most fun and fantasy friendly system and turning it into the worst and most boring team in the NFL. Great job. We play to win the game!
Maybe Brandon Marshall's prediction of 140 catches wasn't so far off? He went 18-166 against one of (if not) the best CB's in the league yesterday. He is simply a beast.
Cincy looks horrid so far and don't say I didn't warn you about Palmer.
Chris Johnson. Fun back to watch. I'm not sure his fantasy impact this season (good to great) but the guy has the "everytime he touches the ball he can bring it to the house" ability. Love it.
Two other rookie RB's are looking excellent as well. Forte and Jonathan Stewart.
Devin Hester: Where are you?
Finally, a very impressive win for the Bills- on the road against the Jags. Buffalo looks to be stepping into the upper echelon of the AFC, while the Jags are now 0-2. The difference? Just look at the QB play of Garrard and Edwards. Garrard has 1 TD and 3 Int's this season. He had 3 int's total last year. Edwards is throwing the ball at a 70.9% accuracy rate with no int's. It's that simple.

Favre needs a Tight End badly.

Minnesota would have been an instant Super Bowl Contender with about 10 other available QB's in the league.

Arizona will kill bad teams and lose to good teams. I would love to watch them play though. Boldin or Fitz should not be on the same team. Trade one for an O-Liner.

N.E. is in trouble.

Buffalo is interesting and I love the way they play.

Good call on Michael Turner

ThePeoplesChamp said...

Turner will be fine. TB has one of the best defenses in the league and Ryan won't start 0-9 2 INt's every game.
He's good for 1200 yards and 12 + TD's.

ThePeoplesChamp said...

Excuse me. I meant 1300 yards and 12 TD's +.

Pollan this post takes your views on sports to new lows. You still think Hester will be a force as a WR? When do o get credit for the mocking I rained on you for that.

Anyway, let's dissect:

Pollan: "Cutler knows his coach has the utmost confidence in him."

Reality: Cutler seemed pretty freaking damned confident before that 2 pt conversion, too. If anything, had he missed that bad % play, he would have felt horrible losing the game. moronic commment.

Pollan: "Super move by a great coach."
Reality: Really? A super move? Giving your team a 40% chance to win and the opposition a 60% chance? Where overtime is 50/50, or better at home? Super move? If they had missed that, you KILL HIM today, guaranteed and you are lying if you say you wouldnt. It was a horrible call. An incompetent decision. It just happened to work.

Pollan: "Mangini showed he doesn't have the balls to win in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE...An awful job by Mangini."
Reality: Maybe you didn't notice, but favre was not good on sunday. And schottenheimer calls the plays, not mangini.

Pollan: "Matt Cassel showed he is at best a competent, hold down the fort NFL QB. Two numbers show exactly how effective he was..."
Reality: He was starting his first football game, not NFL, FOOTBALL game, since High School. You're nuts on this one. And, it's funny, the same things were being said about Brady at first. How quickly we forget.

Pollan: Don't let the result fool you. The Pats were a vastly different team on the field yesterday with Cassel instead of Brady.
What he did do well, is he kept his team in the game and didn't make any big mistakes. While there's a lot to be said for that, the Pats won't go that far with him just "managing the game".
Reality: Um are you aware that was his first College OR pro start EVER? Geez.

Pollan: Tavaris Jackson...is awful and he is killing an otherwise very solid team. Peterson would go for 200+ a week if he had a decent QB keeping things honest. As it is, the fact that he is running up these type yardage numbers shows how great a player he is. You dont think Pennington could have helped them?.....
Reality: I agree with you here. Even a blind squirrel, i guess....

Pollan: Rodgers looks pretty good, no? After two weeks, looks like GB made the right decision; for now and the future.
Reality: Wow. 2 for 2. go TPC!

Pollan: How many more weeks till Derek Anderson loses his job? Don't say I didn't tell you so.
Reality: He'll get it going. You'll see.

Pollan: The Giants looked great again yesterday.....at least when it counted. They seem to lose interest when they get a good lead but they have shown they can turn it on when needed. Eli looked great, the running game is special and Tuck might be the best all around defensive lineman in the game. Strahan and Osi who?
Duck Views: Get a room with Eli, alreafy. That ram team couldn't beat Rutgers. Tuck is a boom though. I think he looks even better than Strahan in his prime! And THATS quite a compliment.

Pollan: Warner threw a proverbial perfect game yesterday, going 19-24 361 yards and 3 TD's for the perfect QB rating of 158.3. I said it once and I'll say it a thousand times, if he has time to set up in the pocket, he's as good as any QB out there.
Reality: That's true of nearly every QB, even crappy eli. Warner was overrated even in his great years and he will end up sucking this season.
Pollans: His numbers don't lie.
Reality: He's actually one of the best NFL exampled of how numbers DO lie. Like Warren Moon was. Remember guys named Bruce and Faulk in their primes? They could have made Tavaras look good.

Pollan: Seattle is lost with all those injuries. KC is just horrid and all fantasy players would like to personally thank Herm Edwards for taking the most fun and fantasy friendly system and turning it into the worst and most boring team in the NFL. Great job. We play to win the game!
Reality: Agreed. That's 3.

Pollan: Maybe Brandon Marshall's prediction of 140 catches wasn't so far off? He went 18-166 against one of (if not) the best CB's in the league yesterday. He is simply a beast.
Cincy looks horrid so far and don't say I didn't warn you about Palmer.
Reality: Here are two of your few strong predictions that are turning out to be money. nice job (so far)}.

Duck Views: Devin Hester!

Duckies-

Now I see why your whole fantasy league fights with you. You dont even make arguments for your statements. You just like to disagree with the Peoples Champ.
You start off with hester? Where does he even get mentioned?
Unless I'm missing the point, Favre not playing well had nothing to do with the point TPC was making. It was about the coach and his lack of balls.

ThePeoplesChamp said...

Thanks Byron.
For those scoring at home and want to know why the Ducks are making incomprehensible and indefensible attacks on The People's Champ, one need to look no futher than the The Peopl's Fantasy Football league and it's history of Duck vs. Everyone fueds. http://thepeopleschampblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/peoples-league-ff-draft-analysis.html

With that being said, let's address the arguments FACTUALLY:

1- Hester- Maybe I'm worng. Who knows. I hope not. I hope the injury has something to do with it but to open your comments killing me for that prediction is crazy especially since I made fun of it myself in the column. That's called "creating controversy out of nothing". Good one. You should look for a job at The Star.
2- Cutler- Of course he has confidence and of course Shanahan has confidence in him. That's exactly why he made the move. he seems someone special and wants to build on that. That's why whether or not the play worked or not, long term it's a great move for teh QB- Coach relationship and everything that goes along with coaching. Shanahn knows he needs a QB to win in his system and is doing everything he can to develop that with Cutler.
3- Mangini- As Byron said, what does Favre playing well have to do with this? Week in and week out Mangini plays not to lose. he did it late vs. Miami and it almost cost his team the game and he did it again Sunday. When you go out and deal for a QB like Favre, you let him make plays. In fact, Sunday, Favre was at hi sbest when he was improvising. He made some great plays. He looked lost when he was running the set offense. But I still dont know what that has to do with running TJ 3 straight times to no avail at the pats goal line.
4- Cassel. You miss the point as usual. The point was, yes, Cassel didnt make any mistakes and that means a lot in the NFL (as I pointed out ). However he didnt do anything special. He only threw 2 balls past 10 yards. When you have a brooding in the making WR like Moss and 3-4 good offensive teams in the AFC to deal with, that is not a winning formula. Period. Explain differently with facts. and the point that he hasnt started since HS, is exactly my point.
5- 20-29 260 yards and 3 TD's. What else does Eli have to do
6- Can you give me one shred of evidence (factual of course) that gives me any reason at all to think Derek Anderson will be good?
His last good game was vs. Pitt in Week 9 last year. he has been awful since. Look up the numbers. 10 TD's and 12 INT's in 9 games. During that same time, the guy you love to kill, Kurt Warner, has gone 19-11 with a 6-3 record.
I agree with you on Moon. I think he was a good QB who's numbers looked great because of a system. He also never won, which Warner has, and if not for Brady, he would have won twice. Funny thing you should bring up Faulk and Bruce. The numbers they put up with Warner were much better than without Warner. I'm going to a whole column about this. Warner actually made them beter players.
And as great as Faulk was, he's on par talent wise with AP and AP hasnt made Tavaris look good. he is the worst starting QB in the league. Easily.

Byront? you don't even have the balls to say your real name? i have no idea who you are and strongly suggest you are the very same guy who posted right after you.

I have not had "feuds" in YEARS with fantasy teams. Many years at that. And pollan is the only one who says i dont support statements with reasoning, hence my suspicion about who byronT is. No one else has ever said that (well maybe, gng). But feuds with GNG? from 10 yrs ago? please! post under your own name, TPC.

Oh, and as for hester, that was just a jab having nothing to do with the substance of pollan's post. it's called having fun and busting balls, loosten up, "byront".

one more thing. i find it funny that you kill me on EVERY single point i made, as if everything i said was completely moronic. except, i'm not a complete moron. surely, not EVERY point i made was moronic. but you make me sound so. coveniently you even ignore my specific point about it being a TERRIBLE football move for shanahan to go for 2 there. to make me sound like a moron for that shows that you just want to kill me no matter my opinion, because you can't possibly think that my argument about that was not valid.

in contrast, even though i killed you, pollan/byron, i also pointed out SEVERAL comments you made that were right on point. you seem to assert that every thought/opinion i have is retarded.

and, i'm just having fun here. relax. i enjoy reading this stuff, even if i disagree...

ThePeoplesChamp said...

Ducks,

Relax. You know I love our years long feud.
You are not a moron you jujst take some moronic positions. I pointed out my points and brought substantial proofs regarding the points and you just disagree (Anderson and Warner) or miss my point entirely (Mangini, Cutler and Cassel).

As for ByronT, I have no idea who he is, but i do know he's not TPC.

Keep posting. You keep me sharp.

Ya Whooa's

Getting your name to show up here on google is too annoying.

The 2 Pt conversion issue is tuff. Basically Shanahan had a play that he felt had better then a 50% chance to work. I like the call too. This is a case where it's impossible not to Monday morning QB. I believe Shanahan knows the stats and just liked that play against that team.

Warner has always been able to put up monster numbers when he gets time. Is this true about all QB's? No. Obviously you play better when you have time but he plays extraordinary when he does.
